Potentials of the sharing economy in mechanical engineering. Digitization is revolutionizing the sharing of resources and enabling new business models.
Digitization is revolutionizing the sharing of resources and enabling new business models. At an event, companies discussed the potential of the sharing economy in mechanical engineering.
The collective use of resources, summarized under the slogan "sharing economy", is actually an old hat. Already in the pre-digital age this kind of economy was established in the form of bake houses or machine rings. What is new, however, are the technological possibilities resulting from digitization. For example, information about the location, status or utilization of a resource can be retrieved in real time. In addition, the communication between provider and customer is considerably simplified and spatially independent. Digitization is thus the enabler for new business models of the sharing economy.
The business model innovations associated with the new digital opportunities are impressive: AirBnB has become the highest rated global hotel chain without owning a single hotel and the mobility service provider UBER has not got a single taxi driver on the payroll. Interesting in this development, however, is the fact that these and other impressive examples are mainly located in the C2C and in the B2C area.
Guidepost for sharing economy in mechanical engineering
In mechanical engineering, on the other hand, it seems that the collaborative use of industrial resources is still in its infancy. One exception is the company fabrikado, which presented its business model at our event. Fabrikado allows the linking of customer orders in the areas Laser cutting and 3D-printing processes with free production capacities of original equipment manufacturers.
